SEO for Technical Founders: the 8-Hour Investment That Compounds for Years

Most technical founders ignore SEO until they wish they had not. Year 2 hits, paid acquisition is expensive, organic is flat, and they realize the 8 hours of SEO work they could have done in week 1 would have compounded into 200+ organic visits per month by now.

This post is the 8-hour investment that pays back for years. Two hours of keyword research, two hours of on-page optimization for your top 3 existing pages, two hours of writing one comparison post, two hours of technical audit. That is it. The compounding starts in month 3-4.

Hour 1-2: Keyword Research

The goal: identify 20-30 low-competition keywords with clear buying intent that your audience is actually searching for.

Tools (mostly free)

  • Google Search Console: free. Shows what your site already ranks for, even on page 5. The fastest wins are usually here.
  • Google Keyword Planner: free with Google Ads account. Volume estimates for keyword ideas.
  • Ahrefs free tier: 10K backlinks/month, keyword difficulty scores. Sufficient for first audit.
  • Answer The Public: free. Surfaces question-format searches around a topic.

The keyword formula for new sites

For a new domain (DR under 20), target keywords with: KD under 25, volume over 100, and clear commercial intent. Long-tail (4-6 words) beats short-tail every time at this stage.

Bottom-of-funnel keyword types

  • "X vs Y" comparisons — your product vs competitor
  • "X pricing" / "X cost" — buyers researching cost
  • "Best alternatives to X" — dissatisfied users of competitor
  • "X tutorial" / "X guide" — users implementing
  • "X integration with Y" — technical users connecting tools

Output

A spreadsheet with: keyword | search volume | KD | current ranking (if any) | target page. 20-30 rows, sorted by expected effort/return ratio.

Hour 3-4: On-Page Optimization for 3 Pages

Pick your 3 highest-traffic existing pages (Google Search Console shows you). Optimize them for the target keywords identified in hour 1-2.

The on-page checklist per page

  • Title tag: 55-65 characters, includes primary keyword, reads as a real title.
  • Meta description: 150-160 characters, includes keyword, has a benefit/CTA.
  • H1: matches search intent, includes primary keyword variation.
  • First 100 words of body: include the primary keyword naturally. Google weights early content heavily.
  • H2/H3 structure: covers related sub-topics, includes keyword variations.
  • Internal links: 3-5 links to other pages on your site with descriptive anchor text.
  • Image alt text: descriptive, not "image-1.jpg".
  • Schema markup: at least Organization and WebPage. Article schema for blog posts.

What not to do

  • Stuff keywords. 1-2% density max. Reads as natural prose.
  • Hide text. Cloaking gets you penalized.
  • Keyword cannibalization. Two pages targeting the exact same keyword compete against each other.

Hour 5-6: Write One Comparison Post

The single highest-leverage content piece for a new site: "[Your product] vs [established competitor]." High intent, manageable competition, often poorly served by existing content.

Structure of a winning comparison post

  • Title: "[Your product] vs [Competitor]: Side-by-Side Comparison for [Use Case]"
  • Intro (100 words): who is this for, what is the bottom line.
  • Quick verdict table: 5-7 row comparison table — pricing, features, target audience, etc.
  • Section per dimension: Pricing, Features, Performance, Support, Integration. Be fair — acknowledge competitor strengths.
  • "Choose X if..." / "Choose Y if..." section: helps user self-select.
  • FAQ: 4-6 Q&As addressing common objections.
  • Word count: 1,500-2,500 words. Long enough to be authoritative, short enough to be readable.

The honesty rule

Comparison posts that are obviously biased toward your product do not rank. Users (and Google) detect them. Posts that genuinely help readers decide — including acknowledging your competitor's strengths — rank much higher and convert better.

Hour 7-8: Technical Audit

Most sites have 5-10 technical SEO issues that are easy to fix and have outsized impact. The 2-hour audit catches the worst ones.

The technical audit checklist

Indexability

  • robots.txt is not blocking anything important. Check at yoursite.com/robots.txt.
  • Sitemap.xml exists and is submitted to Google Search Console.
  • noindex tags are intentional. grep for "noindex" in your codebase.

Canonical tags

  • Every page has a self-referencing canonical tag.
  • Duplicate content (e.g., /about and /about.html) has one canonical version.

Core Web Vitals

  • LCP under 2.5s: compress images, lazy-load below-fold content, use a CDN.
  • INP under 200ms: defer non-critical JavaScript, avoid long tasks.
  • CLS under 0.1: reserve space for images and ads, avoid layout-shifting JS.

Check with PageSpeed Insights. Fix the issues it surfaces.

Mobile usability

  • Site is mobile-responsive (Google indexes mobile-first).
  • Tap targets are not too close together.
  • Text is readable without zooming.

HTTPS

  • Site uses HTTPS. HTTP redirects to HTTPS.
  • No mixed content warnings (HTTP resources on HTTPS pages).

Schema markup

  • Organization schema on homepage.
  • Article/BlogPosting schema on blog posts.
  • FAQ schema where you have FAQ sections.
  • BreadcrumbList where relevant.

  • Month 12: 500-2,000 organic visits/month if you continued writing 1+ post per month.

The 8-hour investment alone produces results. Continuing to publish 1-2 posts per month compounds those results.

The Compounding Effect

SEO is the channel where past work keeps producing. A blog post that ranks today still ranks 3 years later (with minor maintenance). The 1,000 monthly visits you build by month 12 are still arriving in year 3 with no additional spend.

Compare to paid acquisition: every visit costs the same in year 3 as in year 1. SEO's amortized cost per visit drops every month.

The Anti-Patterns

  • Buying backlinks. Risk of penalty exceeds value at any reasonable budget. Skip.
  • Spinning AI content. Google's helpful content update specifically targets thin AI-generated content. Quality > volume.
  • Targeting high-volume keywords too early. Your DR is too low. Aim for the long tail.
  • Ignoring Google Search Console. The data is free, accurate, and most founders never look at it.
  • Hiring an SEO agency in year 1. €5K/month for results you could produce in 8 hours.
  • Skipping the technical audit. A site with broken canonicals or slow Core Web Vitals caps every other optimization.

What to Do in Month 2-12

The 8 hours is the foundation. Beyond that:

  • Monthly: 1-2 new blog posts targeting next keywords from your list.
  • Monthly: review Google Search Console for posts ranking in positions 4-15. These are update candidates that could move to #1-3 with refinement.
  • Quarterly: re-run keyword research. Search behavior changes. New opportunities appear.
  • Quarterly: re-check Core Web Vitals. Site changes can degrade performance.

Total ongoing investment: 4-6 hours per month. Compounds into a real channel within 12-18 months.

The Honest Trade-off

SEO is slow. The 8 hours of work today produces results in 3-6 months. If you need traffic this week, paid is the only option.

But the 8 hours you skip today is 8 hours of compounding traffic you do not have in month 12. The opportunity cost of skipping SEO is invisible until you wish you had not.

Spend the 8 hours. Then schedule another 4 hours/month. By year 2, organic is a primary channel and your CAC drops below paid alternatives.
